Is a 7kW EV Charger Worth It?
A dedicated 7kW EV home charger can dramatically reduce charging times and allow you to fully utilise cheap overnight electricity tariffs.
Standard 3 pin chargers typically charge at around 2.3kW. For drivers with higher daily mileage, the available overnight off-peak hours may not provide enough time to fully recharge the vehicle before peak electricity rates begin.
A 7kW home charger can often complete the full charge within cheap overnight tariff windows, reducing overall electricity costs and improving convenience.
How does this EV charger calculator work?
This calculator estimates your daily energy usage based on your vehicle efficiency and mileage. It then calculates how much of that charging can be completed during off-peak electricity hours using both a 3 pin charger and a dedicated 7kW charger.
Any remaining charging required outside of the off-peak window is charged using the peak electricity rate.
Can a 3 pin plug fully charge an EV overnight?
For low mileage drivers, a 3 pin charger may be sufficient. However, drivers covering longer daily distances may find that a standard socket cannot deliver enough energy during overnight off-peak hours.
